Why the six-month visit matters
Even when your teeth and gums feel fine, only a professional exam and cleaning can confirm that your mouth is healthy. If it has been more than six months since your last visit, it is time to book one.
Your exam
The exam is a full look at your teeth and gums for decay and gum disease. If anything needs care, the team explains it and sets up the right treatment, such as a filling, a fluoride treatment or, if it is needed, root canal therapy.
Every exam includes an oral cancer screening, because finding it early makes prompt treatment possible.
Your cleaning
A professional cleaning removes the plaque and tartar that lead to decay, then polishes your teeth. Your hygienist also looks at how you brush and floss at home and offers help if anything could be easier.
Deep cleaning, when gums need it
When plaque and tartar build up below the gum line, a deeper cleaning called scaling and root planing removes it and smooths the tooth roots so the gums can heal. It is done with local anesthesia, a session usually takes one to two hours, and some patients need more than one visit.
