Do I really need a filling?
When decay gets through the enamel, the damage cannot reverse on its own. A small cavity grows and spreads, putting the tooth and the teeth around it at more risk. That is why even the smallest cavity needs a filling.
What happens
The decayed part of the tooth is removed and the tooth is cleaned. A filling then protects the remaining tooth, brings it back to health and stops the decay from spreading. Local anesthesia keeps you comfortable, and most people go straight back to their day.
Avoiding cavities
The best prevention is thorough daily brushing and flossing. What you eat matters too: food and drinks high in sugar feed tooth decay. The team is happy to help with advice any time.

Excellent, excellent dental. I've worked with both Dr. McFerran and Dr. Atif and they're both wonderful. I needed a same-day crown and Dr. Atif had me in and out in an hour and a half with a temporary crown on. I came in for fillings but also had a bridge and cleanings done here in the past. I highly recommend summit point dental! I used to be sedated to see a dentist. I had a horrible experience with another dentist that caused severe anxiety. Because I am comfortable and completely trust the dentist and all the staff I no longer need any sedative and my anxiety is almost nonexistent! I will never see another dentist!

Composite (tooth-colored), amalgam and ceramic. The choice depends on the size and position of the cavity. Composite is often chosen because it matches the tooth.
How long do tooth-colored fillings last?
Typically 5 to 10 years, depending on your hygiene, bite pressure and regular visits.
Can I replace old silver fillings with tooth-colored ones?
Yes. Many patients replace amalgam fillings with tooth-colored fillings to improve how their teeth look.
Filling or crown?
A filling is usually enough for mild to moderate decay. Larger damage or a weakened tooth may need a crown.
