What a CEREC crown is
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramics. The system takes a precise digital image of your tooth, and computer-aided design and milling make the restoration Dr. McFerran prescribes from dental ceramic, right in the office. It can make bridges, veneers, inlays and onlays as well as crowns.
How the appointment goes
While the crown is being made, your tooth is prepared for it. A broken tooth is built up and its sides are shaped so the crown fits snugly. The crown is then fixed with dental cement that is cured so it cannot slip. Local anesthesia keeps you comfortable, and most people return to normal activities shortly after. After a finished crown, most people cannot tell it is not a natural tooth.
Who it suits
Patients with cracked teeth, large cavities, worn enamel or failing crowns may benefit, especially if you would rather finish your care in one visit. There is no temporary crown and no second appointment.

Does a CEREC crown take more than one visit?
No. Digital scans are used to design and place the crown the same day, so there is no temporary crown in between.
Are CEREC crowns strong?
They are made from strong ceramic suitable for everyday use. Zirconia may be preferred for heavy bite areas, and many patients choose CEREC for its balance of durability and natural appearance.
Is the procedure painful?
It is done with local anesthesia to manage discomfort, and most patients tolerate it well.
How much does a same-day crown cost?
It depends on the tooth, the material and your insurance, and an exact estimate needs an exam. Many patients find same-day crowns priced much like traditional crowns.
